| ROCKING WAKEBOARDERS AT
THE THUNER LAKE EMILIE GAFNER AND MARK KENNEY ARE EXCITED OVER
THEIR VICTORIES AT THE WAKESTOCK SWITZERLAND 30 000 US$ PRIZE
MONEY AT THE ONLY EUROPEAN WWA CONTEST
(Thun, 7 July 2002) - The last few days the international
Wakeboard élite gathered at the Thuner Lake. While
brilliant summer weather accompanied the semi finals on Friday,
on Saturday the weather was a bit unfriendly. However, the
perfect atmosphere around the Thuner Aerebasin could not be
spoiled by this, and both the riders and the spectators were
in a very groovy mood. Whirlpools, deck-chairs and excellent
sporting performances thrilled the riders from the USA, Australia,
France, Germany and the Switzerland and, of course, the spectators
(over 5000) along the Aerebasin.
In front of the world-famous and marvellous mountains "Eiger,
Mönch and Jungfrau" the very best wakeboarding acts
were offered. Really gripping - only 50 metres from the shore
- the crowd experienced extreme tricks and moves by the wakeboarders,
who speeded behind the Correct Craft boot with 35m/h over
the water surface.
Altogether 10 riders made it into the finals in the evening.
The Swiss Cyril Cornaro from Montreux was one of them. Only
three women and men could qualify for the super finals, and
the show of the athletes excited everyone. Wakeboarding at
its best - performed by the world best for the applauding
audience. The American wakeboard-legend Darin Shapiro and
the experienced Australian Daniel Watkins were beaten - despite
their top runs - by only one man: at Wakestock Switzerland
the 19 years old Australian Mark Kenney set the example.
His brilliant performance in the semi final was followed
by an exceptional final, and he rocked with a 720 in the super
final together with Hoochie Glides, Air Raileys, Method Backrolls,
Blindside 540's, of the Aerebasin. "It is so unbelievable
that I won! This place is so incredible great that I would
love to live here. Never before have I seen so many thrilled
spectators and such a perfect organisation at a contest. Then
it also does not matter how difficult the conditions on the
water are, one just stands every hard jump. For sure I am
here next year!"
Also the 20 years old Emilie Gafner (SUI), winner of the
lady's class, was very impressed on the conditions and stunned
by her victory. Through a perfect performance, she pushed
Justin Charriere (SUI) and Carline Jansson (SWE) into second
and third places. Now she is very happy over her first national
victory.
And according to Mark Kenney's motto "Party hard, all
the time" the best of the wakeboarders will also assemble
at the next Wakestock Switzerland in 2003!
